颱風的強度是以近中心附近平均最大風速為準，劃分為三級，如下表：

近　中　心　最　大　風　速
每秒公尺每時浬相當風級
輕　度　颱　風 17.2 ～32.6 34～63 8～11
中　度　颱　風 32.7 ～50.9 64～99 12～15
強　烈　颱　風 51.0 以上 100以上 16以上
